Focus Issue: Quorum Sensing in Health and Disease
We are pleased to announce a forthcoming Focus Issue of Pathogens and Microbiome Interactions dedicated to the topic:
Quorum Sensing in Health and Disease
Quorum sensing (QS) is a fundamental communication system that enables bacteria to coordinate gene expression in response to cell density. By synchronizing behavior within microbial communities, QS regulates key processes such as virulence, biofilm formation, antibiotic resistance, and host-microbe interactions. Understanding QS mechanisms provide key insights into microbial behavior in both commensal and pathogenic contexts and opens up new therapeutic possibilities.
This special issue of PMI aims to bring together cutting-edge research and comprehensive reviews that explore the role of QS across diverse biological and clinical landscapes. We welcome contributions that address, but are not limited to:
- Molecular mechanisms of QS in human pathogens
- The role of QS in biofilm formation and persistence
- QS in the microbiome: cooperation, competition, and communication
- Host responses to QS signals
- Anti-virulence strategies targeting QS (e.g., quorum quenching)
- Discovery and characterization of novel QS inhibitors and their therapeutic potential
- Clinical relevance of QS in chronic and acute infections
- QS in polymicrobial and host-associated environment
Article types include original research, reviews, perspectives, and methods papers.

Focus Issue: Innovative Pathology Research for Translating Disease Mechanisms into Clinical Therapeutic Strategies
The Journal of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology (PMI Journal) invites submissions for a new focus issue on innovative pathology research for translating disease mechanisms into clinical therapauetic strategies.
Pathology is central to understanding disease mechanisms and translating biological discoveries into effective therapies. Advances in molecular pathology, genomics, multi-omics, artificial intelligence, and computational biology have transformed our understanding of disease, revealing novel biomarkers, therapeutic targets, and precision treatment strategies.
Emerging technologies, including single-cell and spatial omics, CRISPR-based models, liquid biopsies, and AI-assisted image analysis, provide unprecedented insights into disease pathogenesis and accelerate the improvement of personalized therapeutics.
This Special Issue aims to showcase innovative research that bridges pathological mechanisms and therapeutic development.
Submissions may address, but are not limited to:
• Precision oncology and the tumor microenvironment
• Epigenetic mechanisms and gene therapies
• Multi-omics biomarker discovery
• CRISPR-based therapeutic strategies
• Spatial omics and disease mapping
• AI-enabled digital pathology
• Liquid biopsies for early detection and disease monitoring

All contributions will be subject to a single-blinded peer-review process and acceptance relies with the journal’s Editors-in-Chief.

The Journal of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology (PMI Journal) invites submissions for a new focus issue on forensic pathology. We welcome both original research articles and comprehensive reviews that advance knowledge, methodology and applications within the field.
Submissions may address, but are not limited to:
- Advances in post-mortem examination and interval estimation
- Pathological investigation of unexpected or unexplained deaths
- Molecular and genetic approaches in forensic pathology
- Ethical, legal, and societal dimensions of forensic practice
- Interdisciplinary perspectives (toxicology, anthropology, forensic medicine)

PMI Journal Focus Issue 2026: Artificial Intelligence in Diagnostic, Clinical and Forensic Pathology
Journal of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology (PMI) invites submissions for its 2026 Focus Issue on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in pathology. We welcome both original research articles and comprehensive reviews that explore innovative uses of AI in diagnostic anatomic pathology, clinical pathology and forensic pathology.
Submissions (authored by humans) may address, but are not limited to:
- The integration of AI in resolving specific diagnostic challenges in pathology.
- Original investigations demonstrating the clinical utility and impact of AI-driven approaches.
- Critical analyses and systematic reviews assessing the strengths, limitations, and future challenges of implementing AI in pathology

Special Invitation: Mini-reviews
The PMI Journal welcomes submissions of mini-reviews, extending a special invitation to contributors where the initial draft has been generated by a junior scientist, such as a postdoctoral researcher, graduate student, or undergraduate student. This inclusive approach aims to foster the development and recognition of emerging talents in the scientific community.
Mini-reviews should be concise, summarizing new and emerging fields and be accessible to non-specialists.
Manuscript format:
- Approx. 3000 words (references not included)
- 1-3 figures/tables
- Up to 50 references
