Quorum Sensing in Health and Disease
Quorum sensing (QS) is a fundamental communication system that enables bacteria to coordinate gene expression in response to cell density. By synchronizing behavior within microbial communities, QS regulates key processes such as virulence, biofilm formation, antibiotic resistance, and host-microbe interactions. Understanding QS mechanisms provide key insights into microbial behavior in both commensal and pathogenic contexts and opens up new therapeutic possibilities.
This special issue of PMI aims to bring together cutting-edge research and comprehensive reviews that explore the role of QS across diverse biological and clinical landscapes. We welcome contributions that address, but are not limited to:
- Molecular mechanisms of QS in human pathogens
- The role of QS in biofilm formation and persistence
- QS in the microbiome: cooperation, competition, and communication
- Host responses to QS signals
- Anti-virulence strategies targeting QS (e.g., quorum quenching)
- Discovery and characterization of novel QS inhibitors and their therapeutic potential
- Clinical relevance of QS in chronic and acute infections
- QS in polymicrobial and host-associated environments
Article types include original research, reviews, perspectives, and methods papers.
All contributions will be subject to a single-blinded peer-review process and acceptance relies with the journal’s Editors-in-Chief.
